Crafty Tuesday: Felt Photo Snowman Ornament

December 7, 2010 by Leandrea Voskanian

If you know me then you know that Felt has to be my favorite crafting medium at this stage in my life.  I have made a candy corn costume, crayola color crayon costumes, Yo Gabba Gabba character t-shirts, and numerous crafts out of felt.  So, it should come as absolutely no surprise that this week’s Crafty Tuesday post uses felt as the main crafting medium.  It is so easy to use, inexpensive to purchase, and the possibilites are endless!  Today’s craft is one for the kids to make and the adults to cherish year after year.

Have I told you my other favorite crafting tool?  COOKIE SHEETS!  When we get out glue, glitter, and sparkles I immediately grab the crafting cookie sheets for the girls.  It is inevitable that all the crafting supplies end up on the table (and floor).  Using a cookie sheet makes the mess a breeze to clean.  So if you ever thought that we were crafting on cookie sheets you were absolutely correct.  Try it and you will love using them too!  On to the craft – Felt Photo Snowman Ornaments.

Materials:
Felt (of course!) – white and black are great color choices
Pipe Cleaners (cut in half)
Scissors
Pictures
Sparkles! Glitter glue, glitter, glue, sequins, whatever you have
Hot Glue gun (not necessary, but incredibly nice.  I love my low-temp glue gun)
Pattern – I used the Kidtoons snowman coloring sheet scaled down a little

Steps to make a Felt Photo Snowman Ornament
1) Print your snowman template
2) Use the snowman template and cut the felt.  I could only cut 2 layers at a time.
3)  Let your child decorate!
4) Allow the glittery gluey gooey mess creation to dry
5) Cut a hole in the head
6) Cut around a photo of your child’s head
7) Adhere photo to felt snowman
8) Put a pipe cleaner on the back of the snowman to create arms
9) Glue a second (optional to decorate) snowman piece to the back.  Additional trimming may be required to make the sides match evenly.
10) Cut out a hat and adhere
11) Use a pipe cleaner to create a loop to turn this snowman in to an ornament!

Each of my girls are working on her own snowman ornaments to send to grandparents.  We made these as Christmas trees last year, which are just as easy and cute!  Don’t be surprised next year when we make this same craft as a gingerbread person.

We enjoyed Cold Stone Hot Cocoa while we made our snowmen ornaments.  We even added snowmen marshmallows – who knew such a thing existed!

Am I the only crazy felt crafter?  Have you made any fun crafts this holiday season?  We would love to see them………..and we would love for you to be a guest poster (with a link to your blog, of course).
