Living near a city where Cirque du Soleil brings traveling performances is incredible. The newest Cirque du Soleil show to come to the Atlanta area is TORUK: The First Flight. This performance will be held in Duluth at the Infinite Energy Arena in a few days! As I read through the press materials…I am so excited that I will be seeing this show in a week.
If you have never seen a Cirque show, you need to see one. The performers are so talented and accomplish physical feats that seem curiously impossible.
ABOUT TORUK
TORUK – The First Flight, inspired by James Cameron’s AVATAR, a live experience by Cirque du Soleil®, envisions a world beyond imagination set thousands of years before the events depicted in the film. The word Toruk, in the Na’vi language, refers to the great leonopteryx, the mighty red and orange predator that rules the Pandoran sky. Central in Na’vi lore and culture, this fascinating creature is crucial to the Na’vi clans’ sense of destiny and interconnectedness – and is about to be ridden for the very first time by a Na’vi.
TORUK – The First Flight is Cirque du Soleil’s 37th production since 1984. The company has brought wonder and delight to more than 155 million spectators in more than 300 cities on six continents. Cirque du Soleil has close to 4,000 employees, including 1,300 performing artists from close to 50 different countries.

Our Thoughts
Last night our family of four saw TORUK at the Infinite Energy Arena. I loved the big venue…and I was worried I wasn’t going to. The tent shows feel intimate and I thought something might be lost with the enormity of the arena. After watching the show, I am happy to say that I still had the same Cirque feeling in the bigger arena.
I have not seen Avatar (gasp, it’s blasphemous, I know) so I had zero storyline expectations and was a blank slate. I will say that this was more like live theater than any other Cirque show I have seen. There was a narrator and a plot and the whole good versus evil type of a theme. Unlike other Cirque shows, TORUK did not have trampolines, high wires, or trapeze artists. It did have amazing feats performed on ropes, incredible balance, and the ability to do flips and more.
TORUK was my husband’s first Cirque show. He had high expectations for all the flare I have talked about in other Cirque shows so he was a little disappointed that this did not follow the same trend.
My daughters loved the show! Little Sister (age 8) loved the puppets and kites (as did my husband). Big Sister (age 9) said “It was good. I liked it. It was interactive. It was waaaaay better than watching TV.”
With any Cirque show, the effects, costumes, and makeup are incredible. If you have the chance to see this, DO IT!
