Children’s Book: A Bear and His Boy Review and Giveaway (closed)

Bedtime at our house always consists of at least a few bedtime stories.  I’m a sucker for books so while we already have a million children’s books, I am still always looking for more great reads for my children.  I find reading books to my children such great quality time together, and it’s always that much more fun when the book we are reading is enjoyable to both of us!

My oldest child has always taken after her mommy and enjoyed reading any type of book out there.  My 2.5 year old son, however, could take or leave a lot of books.  Even though I began reading to him when he was only weeks old every single night, he still would rather play and run around doing “boy” things than to sit still and listen to books at his age.  Only recently have I been able to get him to sit through an entire book (and sometimes two or three), and even then there are only certain books he will sit through.  They have to either (a) have pictures and talk about some of his absolute favorite things (which are tractors, trains, four wheelers… are you getting the picture or what?  Typical boyish stuff with wheels is right up his alley) or (b) be somewhat silly that keeps him laughing or interactive where he has to participate with finding things behind hidden flaps, etc.  I wasn’t sure how he would take to reading a bear and his boy, but we gave it a try and came up successful!  It’s a new addition to the rather small pile of books he will sit through for the time being!

A bear and his boy is a short-illustrated story about a bear who wakes up one day to find a boy on his back.  The bear has a jam-packed schedule that he ends up having to take Zach (the boy on his back) with him to accomplish.  In the end, the boy makes the bear learn to relax by stopping and smelling the lilacs.  It’s a cute, funny book that rhymes as it goes along.  Not only is it fun for the child to read, but it’s a book that’s not so bad for us parents to read either.

My 2.5 year old doesn’t quite get the hidden lesson to be learned in the book just yet, but he thinks it’s pretty funny that there is a bear with a boy stuck on his back and even funnier that the bear is out shopping, kayaking, and playing football among other things.  And I love that not only is this a book that keeps him occupied and entertained, but it’s a book that even makes me stop and think for a minute about what really is important in life.  We all rush through our crazy schedules and could always use a reminder at the end of the day that it’s more important to just take the time to enjoy each step of our lives.  So more bedtime stories at our house with my little ones.. the laundry can wait!

My daughter and son reading their books at bedtime.  (Shh… This gives you a sneak peek at our next book giveaway as my daughter’s book will also be a review and giveaway!)
