Samantha: An American Girl Holiday brings history to life as it takes girls on a journey back to New York in 1904.  This first full length American Girl movie stars Samantha Parkington, one of the beloved American Girl dolls.

Samantha’s proper Grandmary teaches Samantha proper etiquette including not interrupting adults and being respectful to others.  When Samantha meets Nellie O’Malley, the servant girl next door, Samantha finds a much needed best friend.  Despite coming from different worlds, Samantha and Nellie face sorrow, happiness, adventure, and danger together.  The movie tackles events of the time including factories, women voting, and orphanages.

My daughter’s are (almost) three and four.  We snuggled together on the couch and watched this movie one cold afternoon.  As soon as it was over they asked to watch it again.  I was shocked, honestly.  This was their first full length movie that they sat through in its’ entirety.  Not only did they sit through it they immediately wanted more.  Both Samantha and Nellie are charming.  I have to admit that I cried in the movie, which my girls did not understand.  Soon though, they will understand that I cry in just about every movie.

With Winter Break upon us this is a perfect activity for the long winter days.
