We recently cut down a tree in our backyard which freed up a lot of space. We were going to plant a small garden, but with the newly empty space we decided to plant something a bit bigger. We now have a 4×8 square foot garden in the back yard.

There is nothing better than strawberries grown in your back yard! At the gym this morning I read The New Square Foot Garden which I received from Mother’s Day. I really love this book. It makes gardening for someone who doesn’t know what they are doing very manageable. Next year I will try to use Mel’s mix, especially if my garden doesn’t flourish this year. I have 7 plastic planters on my patio that I will plant seeds in and use Mel’s mix for the soil. It should be interesting to compare the garden with the planters. I hope to get a bunch of tomatoes!

I need to get pictures of my garden up on my blog. I just picked 2 gallons of strawberries this morning and will pick more tonight. Strawberries usually don’t produce much the first year you plant them (I got like 6). This year they have taken over a 1/3 of one of my beds! I love my raised garden beds!
