As parents, getting pictures of our children doing each and every little thing as they grow so quickly before our eyes is super important.  It’s just not enough these days to take them to the portrait studio every few months and be satisfied with having only those photos for memories.  It seems like these days almost all of us are constantly in the market for the best cameras because we can never have enough good pictures!  However, even with a great camera, if we don’t have the right techniques and knowledge, we’re still going to miss some really great shots of our children that we would cherish for years to come.

“Photographing Children and Babies:  How to Take Great Pictures” by Michal Heron is a great book for any level of photographer that wants to capture photos of children.  Whether you are a grandparent, aunt, uncle, cousin, mother, father, etc, taking pictures of kids can always be a challenge!  This book has some great tips on how to get exactly what you want out of your camera and pictures.  It does not focus solely on one type of camera.  It gives tips for both SLR users and point-and-shoot camera users and can really help any level of knowledge.

I wouldn’t say I’m a great photographer by any means, but I do have an SLR camera and I can at least figure out how to shoot in manual mode.  Still, I struggle on a daily basis to acquire some awesome shots of my children.  What I loved about this book was that it made me think outside of the normal box I think in.  It gave me easy ideas on how to get great shots of my kids (and no, they don’t always have to be looking at the camera!) including changing the angle of my picture and moving in or out to get a completely different view of them with the same background!  I particularly loved that the book not only explained things to you through words, but they also provided many different pictures to SHOW you what they were talking about.  I found this extremely helpful in understanding each concept!  I’m still a long way from a professional photographer, but I now have a wider range of ideas to get those great shots of my cuties!
