May Food Bank Update: 54 Items for a Profit of $9.07

July 5, 2011 by Leandrea Voskanian

Forgive the messy garage floor. Eeek!

In January I made one New Year’s Goal that I am determined to keep – I WILL donate at least 10 items to the food bank each month. All of my other resolutions/goals have fallen to the wayside by now, but my monthly trips to the food bank are mandatory.

I didn’t document my January shopping trip (oops), spent $1.31 out of pocket for 10 items in February and purchased 19 items for  better than free at Publix during March.  In April I donated 32 items which I “bought” for free.  My May total was even better!

Last month I took my daughters in to the food bank with me. As a parent, I truly will never forget their first trip in to the building. Each girl carried a bag in and helped give it to a worker. As I was filling out the donation form my older daughter explored the shelves and was very curious about everything (proven by asking at least 25 questions) while my younger daughter matched and stacked the peanut butter on the shelf. She was sad that she didn’t get to finish before we left. My girls are STILL talking about their trip to the food bank and asking when they can return.  They understand the importance of donating food to others and it absolutely melts my heart.

In May we donated to Stamp Out Hunger.  Our 11 items totaled $3.13 out of pocket.  From Stamp Out Hunger until the end of may we stockpiled 43 additional items.  Those items cost $69.11 before coupons.  I used $81.31 worth of coupons on those items for a profit of $12.20.  That’s right, I made money using coupons.  I apply that overage to items like milk, cheese, and produce.

In May I donated 54 total items and I profited $9.07 in the process.  Coupons are more than great.  Coupons help me donate to others as well as apply overage to products we need and use on a weekly basis!
