Crafty Tuesday: Crusty to Crafty Supply Organizer

During our garage sale last year I found this crusty toolbox that used to be my mothers. It had at least 20 or 30 years of grime on it too. I’m kind of sentimental and didn’t want to let it go so I kept it trying to think of how I could transform it or use it. I decided to turn it into an art supply box for my son.

Needed Supplies:

Old tool box (Free)

Spray Primer (~$5 or on hand)

that bonds to plastic and metal

Spray Paint  (~$5 or on hand)
that bonds to plastic and metal like Krylon brand

Painters Tape (~$5 or on hand)
Newspapers or old sales flyers

Time: 1-2 Days If you’re like me and have a dozen projects going on at once it will take you quite bit of time to complete this…um like a month LOL!

Cost: $0 – $15

Theoretically you could have all these items on hand and this project would cost you very little!!

Ages: 12+ Due to the use of spray paint

First thing I did was to brush off all the dirt and cobwebs, and removed the metal part of the latch. Then I primed the outside with the spray primer.

Once the primer dries you’re ready for some COLOR! I wanted to give it a two color finish so I needed to mask off the handle and the latch first.  I chose Krylon’s Ivy Leaf for my main color.

I gave the outside a nice heavy coat of spray and then let it dry.

Next step was to mask off the handle and the part on top I wanted white this is where my old sales flyers came in.

The outside is finished:

Since the inside of my toolbox was in just as bad shape as the outside I definitely needed to paint the inside.

I used a brush with some primer to get all the nooks and crannies of the inside primed and it also allowed me to leave the metal brackets that connected the stacking trays unpainted. I was a bit less meticulous with the final coat I just spray painted the final coat.

The box is now so fresh and clean and a welcomed addition to the kiddo’s playroom. All his art supplies are nicely contained and ready for the next project.
