How to Make a Tulle Wand: Perfect for Party Favors and Holidays!

Tulle wands are incredibly adorable, easy to make, and very inexpensive too!  At JoAnn’s 2 yards of tulle costs about $2.00 before coupons or sales.  A dowel costs 59¢ and ribbon can be purchased for as low as 33¢ per roll.  A cheap bottle of paint is 59¢.  Add all of that up and you up to less than $5.00 for at least two tulle wands!   The price is right AND this is a super easy craft.  My daughters love Tinkerbell so we made Tinkerbell tutu wands…..and those were so cute we made some really fun Halloween wands that make a fabulous decoration.

Supplies to make a Tulle Tutu Wand

• Tulle
• Ribbon
• Lighter/Fray Check
• Dowel (cut in half)
• Paint
• Paint Brush
• Hot Glue
• Ribbon/String/Twine
• Scissors/Exacto Knife
• Cardboard
• Bowl
• CD/DVD for tracing purposes

Make a Tutu Wand
1) Paint your dowels first and allow them to dry as you complete the rest of the steps.  Two coats of paint may be necessary.

2) Make two cardboard circles.  Trace a bowl (or CD spindle – or any large circular object) for the big portion of the circle.  In the center of that trace the middle of a CD/DVD to form a donut.  Cut out the circles and set aside. (Please note – there were two of us crafting and we made 4 circles so we could each have our own.  You really only need to make 2 circles).

3) Take your tulle and fold it lengthwise so you get a nice neat folded piece that is about 8 to 12 inches wide.

4) Cut 3 to 4 inch strips and set aside.

5) Pull out your cardboard circles and ribbon.  Cut a piece of ribbon about 12 inches long.  Don’t look at the ribbon in my picture for an estimate of length.  That ribbon was a bit too short.

6) Sandwich the ribbon between the two pieces of cardboard allowing for the excess ribbon to hang out.  Try to get the ribbon to meet in the same place.

7) Take your tulle and start wrapping it around the circle.  Hold the tulle in place with one hand and loop the long end of the tulle through the center, wrap it around the cardboard, and continue wrapping it around the circle.  Do not wrap the ribbon in with your tulle.  My recommendation is to use at least 5 strips of tulle to make them puffy and fun.  Any less than five pieces and they lose their bounciness.  You can double them up and do two strips at once.

8) Now you have a nicely wrapped circle.  Find your scissors.  Starting at one side of the ribbon, cut down the center of the circle where the two pieces of cardboard meet.  Cut around the entire circle.  Do not be afraid – if you let go the pieces are not going to fall out and go everywhere.

9) Now you have a cute little ball that has cardboard in the middle.  Grab the ribbons.

10) Tie a knot … or two … in the ribbons after cinching the tulle tightly.

11) Slide the cardboard circles off and admire the cute little tulle ball you just created!  Trim as necessary.

12) Grab your ribbons and tie them together allowing enough space for the dowel to slide through.  Use Fray Check or a lighter to seal the ends of the ribbons.  Slide the dowel through and position the ribbon about 1 inch down.

13) Put hot glue on both sides of the ribbon. On the ribbon.  Just make that ribbon stay!

14) Find your tutu ball (which magically changed colors in my post).  Find the center.  Wiggle it around so that you can get your finger through the middle.

15) Place hot glue on the end of the dowel and quickly stick it in the center of the tutu ball.  Squish the tulle around the hot glue.

16) Give your new tulle wand a twirl around the room and say “Bippity Boppitty Boo!  I did it!”
