My Review of Disney/Pixar’s Movie BRAVE

June 22, 2012 by Leandrea Voskanian

Earlier this week my girls and I attended a sneak peek of Disney/Pixar’s BRAVE in 3D (but don’t worry, this movie just came out in theaters today – June 22 – so you can see it now too!).  I have been awaiting Disney to make a princess movie that portrays the feminine sex as strong and not delicate flowers waiting for their prince to come to their rescue.  This is the year 2012 and that crap just isn’t going to happen.  Sure, Kate married Prince William, but the chances of that happening to either of my girls is about zero since we live in a country that has an elected president.  Anyway, I digress.

I have to say that I love, love, love BRAVE.  Princess Merida is the princess that I have been waiting to come along.  She is fierce, independent, and an excellent shot with a bow and arrow.  Sure she wears a beautiful dress, but her hair is not perfectly in place. Tears do not flow when her dress rips either. Merida is a HERO!  Or Heroine?  Either way, she ROCKS!

This being said, it is a tad bit scary.  My older daughter sat in my lap for the second half of the movie.  I snuggled and loved every minute of it.  To me Brave is a combination of Beauty and the Beast’s fighting wolves and townspeople mixed with Rapunzel’s mother knows best theme.

My five-year-old said this “I like it.  I like that the brothers ate the cookie and how they stuck their tongue out.  I love that the princess is Brave and that all the men cheered for her when she shot through the arrow.”

There is the teenage/parent struggle in this movie…the one that we are all fearful of.  As cliche as this sounds, this movie made me realize that I need to keep the lines of communication with my daughters open as they grow up.  I am very glad that children cannot really cast spells on their parents.  🙂  I would hate to see what sort of animal I would be turned in to.

As for boys watching this movie…..they will enjoy it too!  Now, I do think it would be difficult to drag a family of boys to see a movie which stars a princess heroine, but I do think that any brother who accompanies his sister to the movie theater will enjoy it.  There are bows, arrows, bear hunting, and lots of mischief in this movie.

We happened to be at the Disney Store on our Fun Friday and my five-year-old instantly wanted the Brave Bow and Arrow.  She had her money with her and she bought it herself.  She came home and we immediately ripped it out of the package.

Thank you Disney for making a kick butt princess movie that has girls interested in more than Prince Charming!

Now I may try to spend the rest of the day convincing my girls that the princess is named Merida and not Brave.  😉

Disclaimer: I received complimentary passes to view this movie.  It was not required that I post about my experience.  All opinions are completely honest and my own.

We went yesterday and I loved it. I was so excited to see a princess that wasn’t all like…oh my glass slipper and I want to fall in love with prince…swooon. Katie spent the time going between my lap, her seat and daddy’s lap because the bear scenes scared her.
