A told B, and B told C, we’ll meet you at the top of the coconut tree! While reading Chicka Chicka Boom Boom we will watch as the letters race to the top while encountering a few boom booms.
The goal of Storybook Summer is to spend time reading with your children and engaging them in academic learning. No matter what the age of your child, he or she will love spending time reading a book with you! The lesson plans posted here are very informal but will give you ideas of activities you can do with your children every day related to the weekly book theme. Don’t feel like you need to do everything on the lesson plan. Go ahead and make revisions, additions, and deletions. Visit your local library and check out the Book of the Week at the library to save money (just remember to return it on time) or order it online from Amazon or similar.
Thank you for joining us for Storybook Summer!

Tuesday:

Wednesday:
Read: Chicka Chicka Boom Boom
Sing: Chicka Chicka Boom Boom – example here
Craft: Make noise makers! (Just what every parent wants in their house – more noise). Using plastic bottle with lids (water, sobe, etc) fill them with beads, sequins, rice, beans, or other miscellaneous items. When reading the story have your child shake his noisemakers at the “Boom Boom” part of the story.
Additional Craft: Make a paper coconut. Make a larger brown circle and a smaller white circle. Glue them together. Glue cinnamon on the brown paper and shredded coconut to the white paper. This craft smells delightful!
Thursday:
Read: Chicka Chicka Boom Boom
Sing: Alphabet Song
Math: Add coconuts to the Coconut Tree! This fun book will help your child count from one to five. Here is a dot-to-dot that goes from 1 to 32.
Science: Head to the grocery store and examine a real coconut. If taking your kids to the store doesn’t sound like much fun, have one on hand to explore at home. Cut it open and drink some of the milk. Talk about texture and shape.
Friday:
Have Child “Read”: Chicka Chicka Boom Boom
Sing: Alphabet Song
Craft: Have each student create their own three dimensional coconut tree. Use a paper towel roll to form the trunk of the tree. Add green palm leaves made from construction paper and brown pompoms for coconuts. Glue alphabet cereal or pasta to the trunk.
Additional Craft: Trace your child’s hand and arm on to paper. Let them cover up pretend owies with a bunch of bandaids.
