Duck on a Bike by David Shannon is one of my all time favorites. I will share a photo a little later in the week of how well loved our book is. I think every page has tape on it! This book is great to read to help your children learn animal sounds. My older daughter became fascinated with goats after reading this. She still wonders if a goat could come in the house and eat our garbage. 😉
It’s here – the final week of Storybook Summer. Fall is right around the corner and my girls go back to school next week. Well my older daughter resumes preschool and the younger will start. I am nervous to stay the least! I have been thinking about how much I enjoy working on the Storybook Summer posts and decided to continue. Perhaps I will call the next installment Ready for Reading? Give me two or three weeks and we will start again! My girls absolutely loved the Storybook Summer series and I do not want to stop just because we get busy with life. I honestly believe that parents should spend time reading with their children every day! I will do fall, winter, and spring themed weeks which should be fun. Moving on to this week’s story……..Duck on a Bike.
The goal of Storybook Summer is to spend time reading with your children and engaging them in academic learning. No matter what the age of your child, he or she will love spending time reading a book with you! The lesson plans posted here are very informal but will give you ideas of activities you can do with your children every day related to the weekly book theme. Don’t feel like you need to do everything on the lesson plan. Go ahead and make revisions, additions, and deletions. Visit your local library and check out the Book of the Week at the library to save money (just remember to return it on time).

Lyrics
Five (four, three, two) little ducks
Went out one day
Over the hill and far away
Mother duck said
“Quack, quack, quack, quack.”
But only four little ducks came back.
One little duck
Went out one day
Over the hill and far away
Mother duck said
“Quack, quack, quack, quack.”
But none of the five little ducks came back.
Sad mother duck
Went out one day
Over the hill and far away
The sad mother duck said
“Quack, quack, quack.”
And all of the five little ducks came back!
Craft: Make horse shoes – using some card board cut out a few horse shoe shapes. Wrap them in foil for instant horse shoes. Grab a household item that stands alone (paper towel holder or even an empty paper towel roll) and play a safe game of horseshoes.
Activity: Go for a bike ride!
Thursday
Read: Duck on a Bike
Sing: Five Little Ducks
Craft: Create a Duck. Using a piece of yellow construction paper cut two circles. One circle will be for the duck’s head. The other circle will be cut in half for the duck’s body which you will glue to one flat end of the half circle. Use yellow construction paper for a triangle nose. Use a google eye or create one with white paper. Cut a smaller half circle out of the remaining half circle that you have and adhere to the ducks’s body as its’ wing. It’s not nearly so confusing when you see it – photo to follow in a Crafty Tuesday post.
Phonemic Awareness: Whoops! Read the lines that each animal says in the story again, but change one of the words by altering either it’s beginning (the /d/ in duck) or ending (the /k/ in duck) sound. Have your child listen for the mixed up word and see if he/she can fix it. For example: He’s going to gurt himself if he’s not careful.
Kitchen Snack: Make pig slop! Be creative. We will use raisins, almonds, yogurt covered raisins, teddy grahams, and cheerios.
Friday

Craft: Make bike streamers for your child’s bike. Be creative! You can use a plastic shopping bag cut in to strips, ribbon, garland, or paper streamers. Have fun decorating. Be sure to talk about helmet safety!
Activity: Go for a bike ride!
