I received free tickets to see one Horizon Theatre Avenue Q performance . All thoughts and opinions expressed in this post are my own.
We are very fortunate to see many Broadway musicals in the Atlanta area. Seeing a local production of a Broadway musical is always a special treat since the cast is from the local area. Opening the playbill and seeing just how talented those local actors are is very inspiring. Currently Horizon Theatre presents Avenue Q at Oglethorpe University’s Conant Performing Arts Theater through July 12, 2015.
If I had to declare which Broadway show I like the best…it’s a total tie between Avenue Q and Wicked. I saw Avenue Q in Las Vegas in 2006. I was pregnant at the time and the smell of cigarette smoke made me physically ill (I was not a happy pregnant lady). I knew nothing about the show before we went to see it (my husband purchased the tickets). After walking through the smoke filled casino to our seats to find out that I was watching a PUPPET play, I was more than super annoyed. The pregnant rage I felt at my husband was intense. How dare he drag me through a smoke filled casino to see a glorified version of Sesame Street? But then……..the show started…..and I started laughing….and I soon forgot how mad I was at my husband.
Avenue Q is NOT politically correct. Avenue Q is not rated G, PG, or probably even PG-13. Avenue Q uses explicit language. And there is a puppet sex scene. <— That’s not a lie. Avenue Q talks about homosexuality.
Reasons to See the Avenue Q Atlanta Event
It looks at life realistically. There is a lack of money, lack of employment, fights between friends, love, and so much more.
Actors do double duty between different puppets. It’s pretty amazing watching them on stage.
The soundtrack includes a mixed tape. The songs will make you want to buy the soundtrack (we did!) or add to your YouTube list. The songs come in very handy in life and anyone you watch Avenue Q with (or who has seen it) will appreciate you busting out into song lyrics in real life situations.
It’s only for now. Get your tickets while you still have the chance to see this great play!
(Plus, when you see the Horizon show you are encouraged to exit across the stage…and there are plenty of photo opps!)
If you are seeing this performed at Oglethorpe University here are a few things to know:
- Concessions are sold and allowed in the theater. The prices are very reasonable. A bottle of water was $1.00 and a bottle of beer was $4.00.
- The theater is not large…which means the seats are good! We were in row J and could see everything incredibly well.
- Puppets Picknicking is available. You can order real food (not just concession stand food) to eat before or even during the performance.
- A PG-13 performance of is available! (I have no idea what it entails, so I cannot give any advice on this).
