Coupons: Purchase vs. Transaction

April 9, 2011 by Leandrea Voskanian

Coupons can be confusing, especially when you are new to using them.  Some coupon fine print includes this statement: “Limit one coupon per purchase…” One of the most common questions out there is “What is the difference between a purchase and a transaction.”

Limit one coupon per purchase: This means one coupon per item purchased. If you put 16 items on the conveyor belt you are purchasing 16 items. So it is acceptable to use one coupon per item purchased….assuming you have $x/1 coupons for the exact items you are purchasing.

Limit one item per Transaction: A transaction occurs when you pay for all of your items and ends when the cashier hands you a receipt.

Imagine this: you put 16 items on the conveyor belt, the cashier scanned each one and then pressed Total. You paid the cashier and ended your one transaction.

Now imagine this: You put 16 items on the conveyor belt with a divider between each item. Your cashier scans one item, presses total, and you pay for your one transaction. This process is repeated 15 more times. You just completed 16 transactions.

If your coupon says “One coupon per transaction” then you may use only one of those coupons in your transaction.

Limit one item per Customer: You are a customer each time you enter the store.  It is up to you how literal you want to take this verbiage and if you want to be “that couponer” known by the management as someone who pushes the limits.
