The spring and summer months are a perfect time to have a yard sale. Great weekend weather makes it easy to sit outside and earn a few dollars. We have had several yard sales over the years and it is always so rewarding when the day is over and there is a pile of easily earned cash. Yard sales definitely help us have summer fun on a budget!
Tips for Having a Great Yard Sale
Start planning early. Do a deep clean of your house and move all your yard sale items to a pile for the big day.
Check Craigslist. If you are selling big items you may want to check Craigslist to see how much similar items are priced on there. People who shop at yard sales want rock bottom prices. You may be able to get more money for some items on Craigslist before your yard sale. If it doesn’t sell in time you can lower the price and sell it at your yard sale. I always meet people in public parking lots when I buy and sell on CL.
Use price tags on your items. You can pick up some yard sale stickers on Amazon or even at the Dollar Tree. People want to know what the prices are so they can haggle.
Group similar items together. You can get away with not using price tags if you group similar items together. Using a sharpie write the price on a piece of paper and include the word “each.”
Have lots of one dollar bills. You will need change at your yard sale. Get $25 (or more) in ones. Keep your money in a school supply box or an envelope.
Keep a pile of plastic shopping bags nearby. You can bag people’s items as they shop. This can create clarification that those particular items are no longer for sale.
Use big font on your sign. Put your street name in big letters so people know where they are going. Use a store bought sign or make your own with poster board.
Hang your signs the night before the yard sale. Using yarn attach some balloons with the signs. Balloons give the appearance that you are going to have a big sale since you put a lot of effort into advertising it. People ask me which others houses in the neighborhood are having garage sales when I advertise with balloons.
Advertise in your local newspaper, Facebook group, and Craigslist. Free advertisement is always a good thing.
