Mr. Penguins Poppers, staring Jim Carey, Carla Gugino, and Angela Lansbury debuts in movie theaters across the county on June 17th. Based on a book from the 1930’s this movie starts when Thomas Popper receives a mysterious crate from Antarctica. His life as a real estate mogul changes into that of a parent to six unforgettable penguins while reconnecting with his own children in the process.
My daughters and I recently saw an advanced screening of Mr. Penguins Poppers (MPAA Rating: PG for mild, rude humor and some language). I am not a movie critic. My job titles include parent (specifically mom, mommy, or mama), house cleaner, dinner maker, mess picker upper, bath giver, chauffeur, schedule maker, book reader, and channel changer. As a parent my idea of a good movie has changed in to one that I can watch with my children (ages 3 and 4.5). Mr. Penguins Poppers IS a movie that we will watch again and again. It starts out a bit slow for the younger child crowd, but once the first penguin enters the scene my girls were hooked.
I am not a huge fan of Jim Carey and was worried that this movie was going to be terrible. I am happy to say that this is a Jim Carey movie that goes on my “will watch again list.” I am pretty sure the only other movie on that list is Liar Liar. As for my girls, they are officially penguin obsessed and know the names of all six of Mr. Poppers Penguins. They have managed to find stuffed penguins hidden away in toy boxes and are now playing “Mr. Penguins Poppers” as they call it.
There is a message of reconnecting broken/divorced families in this movie. So if your family is dealing with divorce you may want to read a few more reviews of this movie before taking your children to the theater to see it because yes, this movie does have a fairy tale like ending.
This is definitely a movie you can take your children to see over Father’s Day weekend. Whether you go as a family or you are a mom taking the kids while dad plays a round of golf, I recommend this movie.
Disclaimer: I received a free pass to see and advanced screening of Mr. Popper’s Penguins. All opinions are completely honest and my own.
