If you have small children then you know that playing video games as a family is akin to hitting yourself on the head with a hammer….on purpose. I am not a big video game player. When I do play I prefer Tetris-like games. So when I tell you that I found the best Wii video game ever for families this is very exciting news. Drumroll please……..
Our family of four can sit down and play New Super Mario Bros for over an hour at a time. This is big news in our house!
My girls are 5 and 6 and have limited (translation = almost no) video game time. In the past we have played games that are just painful. Waiting for one player to make it through a level or for another player to go the right way and catch up was just too much to handle so we abandoned video games until recently.
One of the product features of this game states: New Super Mario Bros. Wii offers a combination of cooperation and competition. What the heck? We tried what was to become the best Wii video game ever for families. And let me just tell you that is so, so, so true! The cooperation part of New Super Mario Bros is absolutely amazing. You can play this game with up to 4 players at a time (Mario, Luigi, Blue Toad, Yellow Toad). Each player gets 5 lives and unlimited continues. The Power Up boxes contain as many power up (mushrooms, fire power, penguin suits, Yoshi’s, etc) as there are players playing so no one needs to be left out. With 5 lives chances are pretty good that the younger players will at least make it close to the end of the level. In each level you will find one continue point, which is incredibly nice. This game is just like the original Mario games that you know and love. You know, the ones from the 80’s that have a scrolling screen? That’s what I grew up playing!
This game has taught all of us patience and cooperation. Every night after dinner the girls beg for a few minutes of New Super MarioBros. If anyone were to ask me for a family friendly video game that a family of four can play together I would definitely say New Super Mario Bros.
The best part – you can try this game before buying it at Redbox!
If you have a Wii U check out New Super Mario Bros. U. I cannot personally attest that the Wii U game is as good as the regular Wii game, but the ratings are almost as high on that game.

So, getting a picture of the TV at night time is incredibly hard. I have a million overexposed pictures. But here we are, in all our glory, playing Mario. I am the yellow toad on the left. My husband is Mario, Big Sister is Luigi, and Little Sister is the Blue toad. There is a lot of jumping on each others head going on in this scene. 🙂
