The PLAY-DOH: Hands on Learning Series Leads to Fun and Learning

July 19, 2014 by Leandrea Voskanian

Play-Doh is a timeless toy that encourages creativity.  We have loved Play-Doh for years at our house – some years giving it out at Halloween instead of candy and other years gifting it to some classmates and friends.  I love that Play-Doh encourages creativity.  When I heard that there were brand new Play-Doh books related to animals I was very excited.  I am not the most creative person (my daughters can probably draw better than I can) so seeing animals created out of one of our favorite mediums in a Play Doh Hands On Learning SeriesBook Collection was exciting.

Silver Dolphin Books, a publisher of high-quality novelty and activity-based books for children has once again joined forces with Hasbro, Inc’s famed PLAY-DOH brand to debut three NEW series of books, all of which continue to live up to their tag line…“Where Learning and Creativity Take Shape.”

The new Play-Doh books are incredible.  Little Sister is growing (too) quickly before our eyes, but she busted out into loud singing when she pressed the buttons on the musical Play-Doh Sound Series books. The classic songs are PERFECT for kids.  We had a great time creating starfish, sea horses, and an octopus from the Play-Doh Story Fun books.  As my girls and I played with Play-doh it was a little sad reflecting that in all my years of parenting I had not thought about making these simple sea shapes before.  These new books are very inspirational.

About the PLAY-DOH: Hands on Learning Series

Explore the pages of these entertaining books with your trusty animal guides as they share their knowledge. This exciting, new series provides youngsters with interesting facts about their favorite things. Each10-page, full-color book includes five tutorials and four cans of PLAY-DOH compound, so young sculptors can create their own imitations of the PLAY-DOH illustrations as well as add finishing touches to each scene in the book. The themes include Jungle (where you can make a  a cheeky monkey, a happy hippo, a friendly frog, a sneaky snake, and a spotted giraffe) and Under the Sea (where you can make an adorable octopus, a super sea star, a clownish clown fish, a fancy sea horse, and a not-so-scary shark). Each colorful page includes amazing facts about sea and its inhabitants making learning fun.

I LOVE that there are 4 cans of Play-Doh with this book.  Black and white are key colors that are missing, so you may want to pick some for things like eyes and mouths.  Overall the colors included are bright and work with the themes of the book perfectly.

About the PLAY-DOH: Sound Series

In this musical series, two childhood mainstays come together – PLAY-DOH sculpts and nursery songs. Press the button on the musical books and follow along with illustrations of lovable animals. All pre-schoolers will love the classic childhood tunes Old MacDonald Had a Farm and The Wheels on the Bus. The books are sure to perfect to bring along on family summer road trips.

It’s always fun having a book that you can sing along with.  These board books are sturdy and can withhold being carried around as your child pushes the button and sings along with the song.

About the PLAY-DOH: Story Fun Series

Each 12-page board book comes with a can of PLAY-DOH compound making it fun to transform dirt and rubble into a beautiful city in PLAY-DOH: Trucks; create new animal friends for Mommy and Baby Giraffe in PLAY-DOH: Jungle Friends; and spend a day on the farm with PLAY-DOH: Farm Friends  and learn about the many farm animals that Mommy and Baby Cow meet.

This is a great way to add more Play-Doh creations to your library.  One can of Play-Doh is limiting, so you may want to get the Hands On Learning Series in addition to these fun little books!

I can remember my mom’s face whenever we received play-doh as a gift. It wasn’t happy because we had white carpet in the house. But we loved playing with it and she never forbid it. 🙂

My oldest sister and I had a playroom in our basement growing up that had a play kitchen.
We used to sit at our table for hours making food out of play-doh and would put it in the fridge, bake it and pretend we were serving dinner that we had made from play-doh.
