For the past 3 weeks my six-year-old has complained about headaches. After 4 days I took her to the children’s urgent care to make sure she didn’t have an infection (ear, sinus, or Strep throat). She received a clean bill of health, but the word “migraine” was used. EEEEK!!! I am 31 and I get migraines. There is no way I can begin to imagine being 6 and dealing with the pain of a migraine. We took Big Sister to the pediatrician and he said if her headaches continued to go see the Neurologist. Our insurance doesn’t require a referral so I called the next day and scheduled an appointment. The neurologist also said “migraine” but wanted us to try a few different things before making a final diagnosis. The first was to put her on a steroid. I was hesitant, but on day 2 of the medication I had my sweet little girl back! The difference was amazing. She was only on the steroid for 5 days and after going off she was back to sassy and clearly not feeling well.
The Neuro recommended an MRI and we went today to have it done. I was terrified that she was going to be sedated. After Little Sister had her ear tubes put in and adenoids taken out she had a rough time waking up from surgery. I didn’t want a repeat scenario with Big Sister. When Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta called the said that “all patients under 8 are sedated for head MRI’s.” Anxiety built. I truly didn’t want to see both of my girls put under anesthesia within 8 weeks of each other. Watching your child essentially pass out is harder than I ever imagined.
Luckily Big Sister had the option of being awake for her MRI today. AND SHE ROCKED IT!!!!!!!! She was in the machine for about 30 minutes and then we were all done. We headed to IHOP for breakfast and then did a little bit of shopping. I can’t wait to see what they say about her head and headaches at her appointment next week.
Now I am getting off the computer and snuggling with my sweet little girl. Deals and coupons will be posted later tonight.
Just to be clear, I get headaches if someone uses a cell phone or one of these gadgets by me. My cordless phone makes my ear hurt too. You might want to try to get rid of gadgets for a whole week. I am very sensitive and your girls might be too. Take care.
Hi, I just wanted to pass this info along. I got bad headaches for years. I woke up with them. I slept with the cordless phone next to my bed and then I read an article that this can cause headaches. I moved the phone and no more headaches! I also get headaches from cell phones, ipad -type devices, and any other little electronic devices like these. Move these things away from where you sleep and see if it makes a difference. I hope this helps. Take care!
I’m so glad she didn’t have to be sedated. I hope you get answers from the test. Have a great weekend!
I pray all goes well with your little girl. I can’t imagine a doctor saying Migraines for such a little one either. Is there anything you can do healthy wise to change it, like eating differently? I just ask because I am all about a natural rememdy before medicine! But I am so glad she is back to normal!
God bless!
I hope everything is okay. Praying for your little lady.
I just went through the exact same thing with my 6 year old little girl- she didn’t end up being sedated either, thank goodness, they didn’t try steriods but instead put her on motrin prescription strength and everytime she feels one coming on I have to give it to her. She also seen a neurologist. Crazy, must be in the things they are eating or drinking, but I have silent migranes thank goodness no pain, just go blind for 45 mins. at a time, I couldn’t imagine as you that a child should have to experience the pain of a migraine. Anyway hope your daughter gets better they say the migranes come and go – 3 years with migranes and 3 years without migranes – we shall see. Good Luck and Prayers to your daughter : )
