Welcome to Week Four of Storybook Summer! The Book of the Week is Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day. This is a book about a boy who is having a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day. We have all had days like that!
The goal of Storybook Summer is to spend time reading with your children and engaging them in academic learning. No matter what the age of your child, he or she will love spending time reading a book with you! The lesson plans posted here are very informal but will give you ideas of activities you can do with your children every day related to the weekly book theme. Don’t feel like you need to do everything on the lesson plan. Go ahead and make revisions, additions, and deletions. Visit your local library and check out the Book of the Week at the library to save money (just remember to return it on time) or order it online from Amazon or similar.
We encourage dialog!!! If you have a great idea, let us know. If you have ideas for upcoming Storybook Summer weeks, send us an email.
I love comments!! Please leave me a comment with your plans for the week or something you accomplished.
Tuesday July 6th
Read: Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day
Sing: The Wheels on the Bus
Craft: Sparkle Paint – Using equal parts of flour, water, and salt make a thin paste. Divide paste into small containers and add liquid tempera paint (food coloring will work as well). Pour paints in to plastic squeeze bottles. Squeeze paint on to poster board or cardboard to make pictures. After the artwork dries talk about how the salt makes the picture sparkle.
Social Studies: print a map of the world. Locate Australia. Talk about where you live in relationship to Australia.
Wednesday July 7th
Read: Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day
Sing: The Wheels on the Bus
Baking: Since one of Alexander’s friends had a jellyroll when Alexander had zero treats make a jellyroll with your kids. We will make a jellyroll similar to THIS one, but will add coconut instead of powdered sugar.
Nutrition: Talk about healthy foods. Make a food pyramid and add sweets to the top. Have students pack a healthy lunch for themselves or Alexander.
Thursday July 8th
Read: Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day
Sing: The Wheels on the Bus
Math: Fill a laundry basket with shoes. Make a trail of shoes around the house. Follow the train and tally how many shows there are total (you could also tally how many shoes belong to which family member or which color shoes you see). Make a simple chart to record your activity.
Health: Talk about cavities and how we prevent them. Switch your child’s toothbrush with a new one and let them brush the teeth of their toys. You could make some floss art by dripping floss through (icky colored) paint and having children drag it across a cut out of a tooth.
Friday July 9th
Read: Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day
Sing: The Wheels on the Bus
Pretend: Office play! Save your junk mail this week for pretend play in the office. Let children play with junk mail, staplers, tape, magazines, pads of papers, calculators, and paper clips. The office will get messy like Alexander’s dad’s office did. Clean up the mess together.
Bath Fun: Mix shaving cream and food coloring in a muffin tin. Let children paint in the bathtub. Try mixing colors together to see what happens.
