What could possibly go wrong if you give a mouse a cookie? We will find out this fifth week of Storybook Summer when we read the book If You Give a Mouse a Cookie by Laura Joffe Numeroff.
The goal of Storybook Summer is to spend time reading with your children and engaging them in academic learning. No matter what the age of your child, he or she will love spending time reading a book with you! The lesson plans posted here are very informal but will give you ideas of activities you can do with your children every day related to the weekly book theme. Don’t feel like you need to do everything on the lesson plan. Go ahead and make revisions, additions, and deletions. Visit your local library and check out the Book of the Week at the library to save money (just remember to return it on time) or order it online from Amazon or similar.
We encourage dialog!!! If you have a great idea, let us know. If you have ideas for upcoming Storybook Summer weeks, send us an email.
I love comments!! Please leave me a comment with your plans for the week or something you accomplished.

Read: If You Give a Mouse a Cookie
Write: Print this page and have your child practice writing. Tell them they are writing a letter and show where you sign your name. You can go as far as letting your child mail this to someone. Talk about where stamps go, where your address and the address of the person you are mailing it to go.

Read: If You Give a Mouse a Cookie
Activity: This activity is fun but takes a child who listens. Place a sheet of paper, waxed paper, or aluminum foil on a food warming tray or electric griddle on low heat. Cover your child’s non-drawing hand with an oven mitt and tell her to hold the paper with that hand. With the other hand have your child rub a crayon slowly on the warm paper to make a melted crayon design.

Have Child “Read”: If You Give a Mouse a Cookie
Baking: Make cookies!!! Then sweep up the mess like the mouse does in the story. Aren’t messes inevitable with cooking?
Discuss: As you child the following questions: If you were the boy, what would you say to the mouse? How do you think this story ends? Do you think the boy will ever give the mouse a cookie again? What do you like best about the story? What’s the funniest part?

For older children, you could use Thursday’s cookies for a flip-the-tile type memory game.
The Mickey Mouse Clubhouse theme or Cookie Monster’s C is for Cookie might be other songs to consider.
