The list of things to do in Atlanta seems to be never ending. One Atlanta area attraction to add to your list of places to visit is the Tellus Science Museum, which is located in Cartersville, Georgia. If you are looking for discounted tickets then you are in luck. WSB’s Family to Family coupon code will save $2 off admission, up to 4 persons to Tellus.
A few weeks ago a friend and I took six third grade girls to Tellus Science Museum for a Saturday Field Trip. Learning about rocks and minerals is a third grade content standard. What better way for kids to learn than with amazing artifacts right in front of them? This was my first trip to the museum. I have to admit, museums are not my favorite place (shhhhh, you can pretend you didn’t read that). That being said, I had a great time at Tellus with our crew. The girls were engaged and the hands on learning was exhilarating.
Minerals were the biggest draw for us. It was neat seeing all the mineral properties on display. There are so many minerals and gems on display. Seeing so many of them up close (and so big) made me wonder what my favorite birth stone really is? I lean towards the amethyst.
One of my favorite things was the periodic table of elements. It is bigger than life sized and breaks the elements into real world items that make sense. The ability to make scientific connections with real life was amazing.
Gem Mining was the highlight of the trip. The girls were able to pan through sand and find tiny pieces of rocks and minerals. To make a fun souvenir from our trip, I painted wooden frames for each girl and she will be able to glue her rocks and minerals to the frame. It is a perfect way to remember all the fun that was had!
When you are done mining for gems there is a Gem Identification chart on the wall. This comes in very handy when it comes to knowing what you are taking home with you.
If fossils are more of your area of interest, there are several to view. There is also a fossil dig where kids can use brushes to look for hidden fossils and shark teeth. Each child is allowed to keep one shark tooth. The volunteer in that room assured me that they are real shark teeth.
Unfortunately we didn’t have time to watch a movie or visit the planetarium so I cannot tell you about those. If we had more time I would have loved to do both of these things.
