We recently sat down on a Friday night movie night and watched We Bought a Zoo, which is based on a true story. Since it is called We Bought a Zoo both of my girls were instantly very curious. They were instantly won over with the little girl in the movie. She is a little older than they are and an absolute cutie pie. One of my friends on facebook warned that there was some language in this movie. Being a parent is definitely tough because I had to decide if the overall movie was going to be better than a few swear words. Ultimately we sat down as a family and watched!
The movie starts with sad hearts as the family deals with the loss of the family matriarch. I play that role in real life and it is always scary to think about what I would miss if fatetreated me the same. By the time the family buys their zoo we were in synch with the characters and rooting them on.
Everyone in the movie used teamwork to ultimately reach their goal. Since we watched the movie my younger daughter randomly asks if we can buy a zoo too. Her imaginative play around zoos has increased 100%. This is definitely a great, inspiring movie. After watching I knew that I wanted to spend even more family time together!
My four-year-old just saw this post (pre-publishing) and said, “Is that We Bought a Zoo? I liked it. I liked the girl.”
Do you remember Matt Damon as a kid in Good Will Hunting? That was 1997. Fast forward to the year 2012 and he plays the roll of father perfectly!
Benjamin Mee (Damon) is a Los Angeles newspaper columnist and adventure writer who, as a single father, faces the challenges of raising his two young children. Hoping that a fresh start and a new life will restore their family spirit, Mee quits his job and buys an old rural house outside the city with a unique bonus feature: a zoo named the Rosemoor Animal Park, where dozens of animals reside under the care of head zookeeper Kelly Foster (Johansson) and her dedicated team. With no experience, limited time and a shoestring budget, Mee sets out with the support of his family and the local community to reopen the zoo. Now, Benjamin is no longer reporting an adventure story; he’s living it in his own backyard.
