My Aldi Produce Trip (with local grocery comparison)

I know we’ve been raving a lot lately about Aldi, but I think it might be the one store that both Leandrea and I frequent weekly specifically for produce.  It’s the perfect place for a frugal shopper when you don’t have produce coupons to use!  I used to participate in a local produce co-op here in Charlotte to get my produce for cheaper, and I loved it, however, I found that my family couldn’t eat everything we were given before things started to go bad.  While I tried to come up with better solutions for this, it seemed we were not saving money by the amount we were having to toss each week.  Add that to the certain fruits that my kids ate too quickly that I was having to purchase between co-op purchases at the grocery store, and it just didn’t make sense to continue doing it.  So now I just frequent Aldi, and week’s like this one, I will probably be in there more than once!

Here was today’s trip to Aldi:  (Please note:  Most of the time, the prices that are posted from the Atlanta ad are true to Charlotte’s ad as well, but I think some of our produce was a little different priced this week for Charlotte!)

Bananas $0.44/lb = $1.24
Green Peppers 3-pack $1.99
Cantaloupe $0.99
Baby Carrots $0.99
Blueberries $0.99
Pineapple $0.99
Strawberries $0.99 x 3

Total Purchase was (before tax):  $10.16

Just for giggles, I compared these items to that at one of my local grocery stores today.

Bananas $0.69/lb= $1.95
Green Peppers $1.49/each ( $4.47 for 3)
Cantaloupe $3.49 (sale price!)
Baby Carrots $1.79
Blueberries $3.99 (sale price!)
Pineapple $2.99 (sale price!)
Strawberries $1.99 x3

Total Purchase would have been (before tax): $24.65

That’s a 59% savings by getting my produce at Aldi instead of my frequent grocery store that I coupon shop at!  I would say that’s worth the extra hassle of shopping at an additional store!

I know some of you have mentioned being worried about the freshness of the produce at Aldi so I took a close-up picture of my blueberries and strawberries to show you what they were like today.  While I have noticed sometimes the fruit being pretty ripe and needing to be eaten within a few days, for the most part I don’t think the condition of the produce is anything different than you find at your local grocery store.
