Coupons ARE Great: It’s Like the Groceries were Free

August 17, 2011 by Leandrea Voskanian

Coupons ARE great!  Tonight I shopped at Publix and scored a $50 Chevron gift card plus a bunch of other goodies for $52.32 out of pocket.  I used free product coupons to get my total up to the $30 mark so I could use my $5/$30 Publix total purchase coupon.  I then used the save $10 off a $50 Gas gift card when your order is $25 or more in ad coupon.  I was flustered at first because nothing I wanted was in stock and I had to make up a new game plan.  (I walked out with 4 rainchecks, but that is what I get for shopping the last hour of the sale.  I do know better!).

Shopping trips like tonight reinforce why I carry around FREE product coupons rather than use them immediately.  The Batter Blaster and Ore Ida were the only reason my total was so high.  The items I intended to purchase cost roughly $23.  However, if I made it to the $30 mark I could use the $5/$30 coupon – which is five free dollars.  So the free product coupons pushed me up to that total (for free) and allowed me to take $5 off the other items.  Clear as mud, right?    Here’s the breakdown.

I am still confused. At my Publix, to use the $5 off $30 coupon the total must be $30 AFTER all coupons, so your freebie items would not make a difference. Am I missing something?

The coupon that I used is a $5/$30 Publix home mailer coupon. It states: “$5 off your purchase of $30 or more. Limit one deal per customer. Excluding all tobacco, alcohol, lottery items, money orders, postage stamps, gift cards, and prescriptions. Customer is responsible for all applicable taxes. Reproduction or transfer of this coupon constitutes fraud. Offer good Date to Date at Publix Specific Address.” No where in there does it say the total is has to be reached before coupons. And that is a fact I would argue if the store gave me any problems. I use my $5/$30 coupons like this ALL THE TIME and have never run in to a problem.
