Kids are so inquisitive and have so much fun in the kitchen. The kitchen is one of the best places to teach children where our products come from. Learning about chocolate is sure to be fun! Most candy wouldn’t be candy without this staple ingredient.
We recently combined chemistry, world culture, history, and cooking in the Make Your Own Chocolate From Scratch Kit. This kit contained enough ingredients to make 8 ounces of dark chocolate.
This was a fun kitchen project. As a parent I love that the products are organic and free of high fructose corn syrup. Inside each Make Your Own Chocolate Kits you’ll find: organic cocoa butter, cocoa powder, confectioner’s sugar, starter crystals, a temperature indicator, paper candy liners, instructions, the story of chocolate, and two cacao beans. Such simple ingredients for a wonderful treat!
To make this kitchen treat we melted the cocoa butter in the microwave, added the cocoa powder and sugar, and stirred. And then stirred some more. There is a nifty little temperature indicator (much like the thermometers we put on our heads as children – remember those? Man, I feel old!) that sticks to the bowl. Once the temperature reaches 94 degrees your stirring is complete and you can add the started crystals and refrigerate.
This is a great gift for teachers, troop leaders, and children over the age of eight. My girls are 4 and 5 and honestly, they were not nearly as excited about this candy making kit as I was. As parents we sometimes think “Oh, that age recommendation isn’t all that important” but I really think that the manufacturer knows what they are talking about on this one! That being said, this is a great classroom project for any child learning about Central and South America. If I had tied more educational pieces in to our activity I am sure my girls would have enjoyed it more than mommy just pulling out a box and saying “Hey girls – who wants to make chocolate.” The educational piece that comes with this kit is important and I recommend reading it before you start this project with your children.
I love Glee (the company that makes this product). Their products are free of preservative, dyes, and HFCS. You can pronounce the ingredients on the lists and there is no need to wonder “What am I putting in my body today?” Natural is good! I will definitely pick up their gum when I see it…….and one of these days I will get the “Make Your Own Chewing Gum Kit.” I am positive my girls would LOVE that kit.
