Reading and science are the fundamentals of childhood. Once a child learns how to read the world is an even more marvelous place. The process of science creates an environment of discovery where ideas are thought through, experiments are conducts, and conclusions are determined.
With the help of our library reading program combined with the Barnes & Noble reading program, my girls have been bookworms. This sounds great in theory, but it has downfalls too. I have to ask them to put books away and I have used “going to your room and not being able to read” as a warning for punishment. To avoid some of the burnout of summer and to keep summer learning alive we are conducting Summer Science Experiments for Kids and we have loved every minute so far.
To combine a love for both science and reading we created a Scientific Method bookmark for everyone to use. I firmly believe that you learn every day. Being exposed to the words in the scientific method as a young child will help make science in high school and middle school less intimidating. Words like “hypothesis,” “analysis,” and “conclusion” can be frightening the first time you hear them. That’s 11 syllables and a whole lot of letters. With repeated exposure to these words kids will gain familiarity and understanding.
Print this Scientific Method bookmark onto card stock…and then laminate….for your kids to use every day of the year. If your kids aren’t reading chapter books yet then use it yourself. Sometimes things are more exciting when they are Mommmy’s or Daddy’s and you may totally inspire your child more than you realize!
