When you think about candy do you instantly imagine sugar, corn syrup, and possibly milk chocolate? I am sure candy does not necessarily make you think about the words “natural” or “sea weed.” Glee Gum manufactures gum and “Make Your Own” candy kits that are all-natural, educational, and eco-friendly. Their gum does not contain any artifical coloring, flavoring, or perservatives. It is made from natural tree sap from the rainforests of Central America. How cool is that?
The Make Your Own Gummies Kit has a secret ingredient: seaweed from the ocean. Seaweed is used in our daily life in toothpaste, and adding it to candy is very neat. Although the Gummies kit is recommended for ages 8 and up, younger children can partake in the fun with the help of an adult. This kit is a “Food for Thought” product designed to connect kids to people in other parts of the world who produce the raw materials for things that we use every day, create something wonderful and delicious to eat, and captivate kids’ interest by learning and doing. When your children learn that they are eating candy made with seaweed their minds will definitely be captivated.
When making the Gummies you can use the stove or the microwave. Boiling the seaweed extracts the carrageenan. You then remove the seaweed, mix in the sugar, boil it again, and pour in to molds you make yourself. The molds are very cool since it is a cornstarch like substance that you can mold how you want. We made my girls’ hand prints and their initials using magnetic letters from the fridge. Sprinkle sour on at the end and you have some yummy gummies!
Did the Glee Make Your Own Gummies Kit taste like candy from the store? No. But we weren’t expecting it too. The sour sugar definitely gave the gummies the kick in to the regular, processed candy my family is used to eating. It certainly was nice to try natural candy.
