Crafty Tuesday: Create a Felt Story Board

May 3, 2011 by Leandrea Voskanian

Creating a felt story board is incredibly easy and the reasons to have one in  your house are plentiful.  My daughters (ages 3 and 4) absolutely love playing with felt pieces….and they love displaying their art. I really wish I had thought about Felt Story Boards a few years ago when the girls constantly played under my feet while I was cooking dinner.  I could have stuck a suction cup to the sliding glass door, hung the felt board on it, and they could have played in the kitchen while I cooked dinner.  Now that they are bigger we will take these with us to doctor’s appointments and long road trips.

This craft is incredibly easy and very cheap to make!

Felt Story Board Materials Needed

  • Felt
  • Picture Frame (I purchased two at the Dollar Tree for $1.00 each)
  • Scissors
  • Glue/Low Temp Glue Gun
  • Yarn or Ribbon (optional)

If you have access to a die cut machine of any kind (Sizzix, Cricuit, Big Shot, etc) then you can use that to cut pieces of felt in to an wide array of shapes and designs to use on the board.  If you do not have one of those fancy machines, all you need is scissors.  Cut squares, rectangles, triangles, and circles.  Children will be able to enhance their creativity putting these shapes together in to fun masterpieces.

Create a Felt Story Board

1) Take the glass out of the picture frame and dispose of the glass and the paper.  Keep the cardboard!

2) Using the cardboard as a template cut an identical piece of felt.

3)  Glue the felt to the cardboard.

4) Tuck the felt covered cardboard back in the picture frame.

5) To make this frame hang tie ribbon or yarn to the back.  I braided a few pieces of yarn together to give it a more artsy feel.

6) To make this be the perfectly portable, I added a plastic bag to the back.  A low temperature glue gun is one of the best tools a crafter can have.
