Family is Great: Pool Parties, Acorn Hunting, Bathroom Lights and More Through October 15

October 16, 2012 by Leandrea Voskanian

Somehow a month has passed since my last Family is Great post.  In that time we have dealt with Big Sister having migraines at the age of six.  I also had a few migraines over the course of ten days and had to get two shots to make them finally go away.  Big Sister is about to start an anti-seizure medication for her headaches since we have ruled everything else out.  The anti-seizure medication is used more for migraines than epilepsy.  It will be interesting to see how the next few weeks go.  I plan on writing an updated post soon.

The last month has been busy.  Here is a little bit of what we accomplished.

We finished celebrating Big Sister’s 6th Birthday.  The one present that she really wanted was LEGO Friends Olivia’s House (in addition to just about all of the LEGO Friends sets that there are).   She talked about Olivia’s House for months and was ecstatic to get it on her birthday.  She received so many LEGO Friends sets from her friends and family that her wish list is currently full.  I have no idea what she will add to her Christmas list.

Another huge hit for a birthday present was a bucket of Perler Beads.  If you have a six-year-old girl you are shopping for, grab these for a present!  (Thanks Grandma Linda!)

We said good bye to summer at our neighborhood pool party.  Having grown up in Oregon where there were very few community use pools and even less neighborhood pools, I still find it strange that neighborhood pools are such a big part of living in the Atlanta suburbs.  Don’t get me wrong, I am definitely not complaining!  Growing up I always thought that people who lived with pools at their house or in their neighborhood were rich.  Most neighborhoods here do have community swimming pools…..and you don’t need to be rich to live in these neighborhoods.

The girls have been collecting nuts in our back yard.  We are going to have some very, very sad squirrels this year.  The girls have collected POUNDS of nuts.  They pretend to cook with them, break them open, and my favorite……

They throw them at targets on the fence.  It’s a fun game that works on hand eye coordination.

Our family uses coupons so we can splurge in other areas of life.  Why pay full price for toilet paper and tooth paste?  One thing that I budget for each year is PHOTOS.  The girls get their photos taken on their birthdays and we get family photos each year.  We have used Tonya Douglas Photography several times now and I am always impressed.  I love that I get a CD of images.  Keeping with tradition, I also make the girls Custom Number Shirts for their birthdays.  I looo-oooo-oooo-ve looking back at their photos over the years and knowing exactly how old they were.

We have been working on our master bathroom.  We started with removing those ugly broadway lights.  We initially replaced them with some lights that I found at Costco for $22.  I thought the lights were good – heck they were a million times better than what we started with.  But they were baaaad and totally not worth the “good deal” that caused me to buy them in the first place.  Plus the people who built our house didn’t center the light holes on the sinks so it looked even worse as I stared at it.  We finally had to take those off and replace them with lights we found online that came on a “bar” instead of a cute single mount.  It looks a million times better.  We have calls in to some tile guys and we will tile the bathroom and then repaint.  The little white stripe of paint at the top of the mirror is definitely not attractive!  I can’t wait for it to be all done.  It seems like a long time has passed since we completed the Powder Room Transformation.

Friday nights Big Sister has soccer practice and Saturday morning she has soccer games.  She has scored 4 goals this season!  Family is great and spending Friday nights and Saturday mornings on the soccer field has been fun.  Soon I will post my Running is Great update.  There are 10 days until my next half marathon!

Have you don’t anything we don’t want to miss?  Leave a comment and let us know!
