Holiday Gift Guide: Fix-It and Forget-It Kids’ Cookbook {Giveaway} (closed)

November 30, 2010 by Leandrea Voskanian

Cooking is a life skill that every person needs to know and in a society that is getting busier and busier it seems like cooking is slowly becoming a lost art.  Starting in childhood is an excellent way to get a head start on good cooking habits.  Plus, cooking with kids is fun.  Even a few cracked eggs or eggshells in food are forgettable when you see how excited children are to cook.  Creating a food masterpiece that the entire family can enjoy is something to be proud about.  The Fix-It and Forget-It Kids’ Cookbook: 50 Favorite Recipes to Make in a Slow Cooker is designed specifically for children.

Phyllis Pellman Good includes 50 favorite slow cooker recipes in the Fix-It and Forget-It Kids’ Cookbook.  I love that this book is cooked in the slow cooker and takes the hazard of using a stove and oven out of the equation.  Yes, I know that slow cookers get hot, but not until after you have added, mixed, and stirred.

Sadly our slow cooker sits on the shelf 99.9% of the time.  My friends tell me how much they love theirs, and I get twangs of jealousy.  I love in a household with picky eaters and there are so few things I can cook in a slow cooker…….or so I thought.  The Fix-It and Forget-It Kids’ Cookbook is filled with recipes perfect for breakfast, lunch, dinner, dessert, and snack.  We made the Crunchy Apple Crisp (p. 108).  Each of the girls helped prepare this dessert – one plopped apples out of the can and the other stirred together the dry ingredients.  It was so fun watching their faces put together a dessert practically by themselves.  Even more fun was my daughter telling my husband “We made dessert tonight Daddy, almost all by ourselves.”  This was a scrumptious dessert that three of out four of us enjoyed.  To be fair, the youngest member of our family wouldn’t try any of it.  She didn’t have the chance to not like it since none of it touched her pouty little lips.

The colorful pages and photos of the cooked recipe make it easy for everyone to decide on a recipe to make.  We wanted to make everything in the book!

The Fix-It and Forget-It Christmas Cookbook is filled with 600 slow cooker recipes.  Although the title of this cook book has “Christmas” in it, don’t be fooled.  These are recipes that can be used every day of the year.  I love that the book is broken up by dish type (chicken, turkey, vegetables).  We are going to try a few of the breakfast recipes this weekend!

These books are a terrific addition to any family.  Pair this with a slow cooker and you will have the ultimate holiday gift!  Another great combo would be one of these books with some cute kitchen towels and a few new cooking utensils.
