Our Laundry Room Renovation

June 17, 2014 by Leandrea Voskanian

We have lived in our new house for eleven months now.  That is the perfect amount of time to decide how to makeover a room so it works for you.  We recently completed our laundry room renovation and I am amazed at the final outcome.  Our laundry room may now be the nicest room in our house since it got a definite upgrade to modern and the paint color is so fun.

small laundry room renovation

The first step in our laundry room transformation was to tear out the linoleum and install tile.  This was our very first time installing tile and I will admit that I was a little nervous.  My husband is great with building things so I wasn’t a complete basket case.  Installing tile wasn’t too hard and the price is very manageable.  The worst part was cutting around the air conditioning vent and the dryer gas line.  We went to Harbor Freight and bought a wet saw for that.  We called around to see how much a wet saw cost to rent…it was $40 for 4 hours or $80 for 8 hours.  That seemed steep so we bought the wet saw and the blade for $65 at Harbor Freight.  Had we planned we could have purchased a wet saw from Amazon for even less.  I guess now that we have this that we should do more tile projects?  We only have one room that needs updated from linoleum to tile…..and we aren’t in a hurry to change that.

A fresh coat of paint was required.  We chose Gossamer Blue by Benjamin Moore but had it color matched at Lowes.  We used a satin paint and it feels marvelous compared to the flat paint that was there before.  We painted when the durock was down, before we installed the tile.

laundry shelf pre

I really detest wire shelves.  Previously, our laundry room was a poster child for what a laundry room can look like with wire shelving.  All your mess is out in the open and reaching the top shelves may mean you throw things up there haphazardly if you are short like me.  Taking out the wire shelves actually jumpstarted the whole laundry room renovation. A word in my defense – the photo of the wire shelving is from our house, but was taken during our inspection when we bought the house.  Our shelves weren’t quite that cluttered.  Laundry room cabinets can definitely clear clutter and make your room look good!

laundry room cupboards

We considered going to IKEA to get new cupboards for the laundry room, but went to Lowes instead since we liked the product, could get cash back through our credit card, and had a 10% off coupon.  We had these satin knobs leftover from changing all of our kitchen knobs from gold to silver, so we put those on the laundry room cabinets too.  Ordering knobs in bulk from Amazon will save you a ton of money if you need a large quantity.

A hanging rod was installed for clothes that need to be hung right away.  The laundry room was a perfect fit for our old IKEA cabinet in the corner.

My favorite part os this room is the drying rack my husband built.  It is crazy how happy that thing makes me, but I absolutely love it!

Again, we used those same satin knobs on this project to keep consistency throughout the room.

I added a cute rug from Target and some laundry signs I found at TJ Maxx.  I am considering purchasing these laundry room signs to hang up in there as well.

So, what do you think?

It looks AWESOME!! Let me know one day how you like the front loaders. I’m a homestead hold out on the top loader washer, though it is a good 12 years old and could use an update. We have a laundry closet with a high ceiling and my husband’s trying to convince me to let him re-do it. Right now, it is fine. We have other projects to tackle (and we’ve been in the house 12+ years!). Great job!!
