Operation Closet Organization for the Girls

August 26, 2011 by Leandrea Voskanian

We had a problem at our house.  The girls’ closets looked like they were from a cartoon.  Each time I opened or closed their closet doors I was scared that I was going to be hit by something.  There was also the thought the the door was never going to close with as much “stuff” as I was pushing in.  Somehow last weekend went from buying a bed for my older daughter to redoing both girls’ closets – thus Operation Closet Organization.  I really wish I had a before picture, but I am super excited to share with you the  after photos.

My husband listened to my somewhat incoherent mumblings of what I wanted for their closets.  The gist was that I wanted shelving and closet rods that were reachable by the girls (ages 3.5 and almost 5).  Digging through the dresser drawers for clothes has gotten to be impossible.  Plus, dresses should be hung up and not folded.   My husband found a few solutions while I was digging through the junk in the closets making yard sale, donate, and trash piles.  We headed to Home Depot on Sunday morning to look at our options.  Originally we thought we were going to get the Martha Stewart closet organizing system, but the store didn’t have it in white.  That ended up being a good thing though!  I want to save the Martha Stewart stuff for our closet because it is pretty.  The girls need functional (and cheaper) and not pretty (and more expensive).

First we cleared out the junk.  There were packages of Huggies diapers in my younger daughter’s closet.  She has been fully potty trained for at least 6 months.

Then we put a 24″ shelf with spaces for hangers in three-year-old’s closet.  The cost of the shelf was between $13 and $15.  We repurposed a shelf and put it on the floor.  It now holds her little toys and books.  I like it laying down rather than upright because I am not so afraid it will fall on her.  She can reach and is able to hang up her own clothes now.  She even chose her Halloween shirt to wear in August.  🙂  Before the closet redo she could not reach any of the clothes in her closet.

Then we started working on the five-year-old’s closet.  Here is a before – with most of the toys taken out.  Very non-functional.  She cannot reach to hang up her clothing.

We chose the Closetmaid Selectives.  The base kit was about $105.00.  I added another rod and shelves to the top.  Our total for this closet was about $135.

My husband and I put the shelves together.   This took very little time – really.

And then it was closet installation time.  This took a little more time since we he had to measure, level, and install.

When everything was installed we have a perfect system! Two rods that she can reach for her clothes and shelving for all the other stuff.

If you have an organizational challenge I totally recommend solving your problem!  I can walk in the girls’ room and breathe a sigh of relief.  They like having the autonomy to play in their closets and choose their clothing as they wish.  It’s win-win-win!

I have a few other areas that I will show soon.  Just what you wanted right – to see someone else’s messy house?  😉

Looks good! My daughter’s closet is so tiny and could use a spruce-up!
