Having miscellaneous craft supplies on hand helps to enable spontaneous crafting and creativity. Now is a good time to snag some great deals on remnant fabric for crafting. With Halloween (costumes) and Christmas (homemade gifts) around the corner, lots of people are buying fabric by the yard which means more remnants in the bin. At Jo-Ann stores, the remnants are labeled with the yardage, the price per yard and the total price. That, however, is not the price you pay. Remnants are at least 50% off the marked price. Why “at least”? Because the remnant is linked back to the original bolt of fabric. If the fabric is on sale, so is the remnant.
For example, today I bought half a yard of felt that was labeled “0.500 yd. x $4.99 = $2.49”. During a different week, I would have paid $1.25 for that remnant (50% off). However, this week felt is on sale for $2.99 per yard. I paid just $0.75 for that remnant (1/2 yard x $2.99/yard x 50% = $0.75).
My plan for that remnant is to make a felt board for story telling and learning fun so I stocked up on lots of other colors of felt as well. Individual felt sheets (9″x12″) are on sale this week at Jo-Ann stores for $0.25 (reg. $0.34) and at Michaels stores for $0.20 (reg. $0.29). Felt by the yard is even cheaper if you expect to use a lot. The bolts of craft felt at Jo-Ann stores are 72″ wide and on sale for $2.99 per yard. A quarter yard (nine inches) costs $0.75 and is like buying six standard sheets at $0.13 per sheet. If that’s too much of a given color for you, you can easily cut it in half to split with a friend.
Update 11/3/12: If your Jo-Ann store has a price scanner, scan the remnant. It won’t tell you the final price of the remnant, but it will tell you price per yard and whether the fabric is on sale.
If you are headed to the craft stores this weekend be sure to grab these printable craft coupons! Save 60% on one regular priced item at Jo-Ann stores and 40% off one regular priced item at Michaels stores.
Anyone have any great tips for storing craft fabric?

Great tip! Just started doing some crafts for kids and didn’t know that remnants are priced differently. Thanks
Hello, I’m glad I found this post. I don’t think I got the deal I should have on a remnant I purchased today. Can you tell me if I’m correct? The remnants are 50% off for the moonlight madness sale.
I purchased a remnant and the tag says 0.778 yd x $9.99=$7.77 So I’m assuming 50% Off the remnant price would be $3.88. However my receipt says the following:
Steelers Blk Ctn *5.83
0.778yrd @7.49 yd
Regular Price 9.99
Remnant (50%) 2.92
Is that right? or wrong? Thanks!
It’s correct. The receipts can be a little confusing. The fabric you purchased is regularly priced $9.99/yard, however, it’s currently on sale for $7.49/yard.
Since the fabric is on sale, the remnant is also on sale. You paid $2.92 (50% off the sale price of $5.83) instead of $3.88 (50% off the regular price).
