I’ll huff, and I’ll puff, and I’ll blow your house down! Every child grows up with the story of the Three Little Pigs. Isn’t it weird that there are sooooo many different endings to this story? This allows parents to choose a version that is appropriate for their household and beliefs. I love that!
The goal of Storybook Summer is to spend time reading with your children and engaging them in academic learning. No matter what the age of your child, he or she will love spending time reading a book with you! The lesson plans posted here are very informal but will give you ideas of activities you can do with your children every day related to the weekly book theme. Don’t feel like you need to do everything on the lesson plan. Go ahead and make revisions, additions, and deletions. Visit your local library and check out the Book of the Week at the library to save money (just remember to return it on time) or order it online from Amazon or similar.
Thank you for joining us for Storybook Summer!
Monday
Read: Three Little Pigs
Sing: “To market, to market….”
Activity: Print and color either a picture of a pig/wolf here or the whole Three Little Pigs story here
Tuesday
Read: Three Little Pigs
Sing: “To market, to market….”
Craft: Straw Painting/Blowing. This craft is great for children who like to paint! Children do not even need to touch paint and it is conceivable that there is no messy clean up. Add a dab of paint to a paper plate. Take a straw and dip one end in the paint. Have you child gently blow paint on paper. If that isn’t a success you can use the straws like paint brushes.
Wednesday
Read: Three Little Pigs
Sing: “To market, to market….”
Craft: Make a pig face out of a paper plate that you/your child paints pink. Add eyes and ears to complete the craft.
Kitchen: Make cupcake or marshmallow piggies. Follow the recipe here. We will omit the cupcake part as I will eat the whole batch by myself undoubtedly and just make the piggy out of marshmallows. Adorable!
Thursday
Read: Three Little Pigs
Sing: This fun song to the tune of “I’m a Little Tea Pot”
I’m a little piggy
Short and stout
Here are my ears
Here is my snout
When I see the
Farmer in the dell
I oink, oink, oink
And wiggle my tail!
Craft: Make a pig out of a variety of sizes of hearts. Every body part except maybe the eyes and tail can be made out of a pink heart!
Math: Practice first, second, third
Friday
Have Child “Read”: Three Little Pigs
Sing: “I’m a little piggy” (from above)
Craft: Construct some houses. Use sticks or popsicle sticks and hay/grass.
Kitchen: Make Pigs In a Blanket for dinner. (In my house we would add some macaroni and cheese to this meal!).

As an early childhood educator for special need children — I love this idea! I will be sending some parents you way to get some ideas as to a great way to read(and so often missed — the re-read) to their child and help experience the book in a meaningful way!
