Our Top 5 Must Visit Atlanta Attractions this Summer

May 22, 2014 by Leandrea Voskanian

There are so many things to see and don in the Atlanta area.  Now that school doors are closing for summer it is time to get out an explore that Atlanta area.  Below you will find our Top 5 Must Visit Atlanta Attractions this summer.  Several of these are in the Atlanta area, and not the city itself.

atlanta area attractions

The list below is in alphabetical order.  I don’t think I could pick my favorite Atlanta Area Attraction of all time.

amicalola fallsPhoto Credit: Amicalola Falls Lodge

Amicalola Falls: Enjoying nature and all the beauty it has to offer is how you will spend your date at Amicalola Falls State Park.  The hike to the top of the waterfall is easy enough that kids can do it without too much complaint and there is a lot to look at on the way up.  This year we want to camp (tent style) at Amicalola Falls.  I am excited that our first camping experience will be near such a breathtaking waterfall!

center for puppetry arts

Center for Puppetry Arts: One of my favorite family friendly attractions in Atlanta is the Center for Puppetry Arts.  My girls love seeing the different puppets in action during the live performances.  They aren’t big fans when we take the tour because some of the old puppets are downright scary, so we often skip that part of the building.  Almost as much fun as watching the performance is the Create a Puppet Workshop afterward the show where you are able to create your very own puppet using a pre-cut puppet kit.  As a big bonus, IKEA isn’t far away, and we can always make a whole day out of these two places!  I would almost like to add IKEA to my list of must visit places.  It is right across from Atlantic Station, which I also adore.

fox theatre atlanta

Fox Theatre: The Fox Theatre is the perfect theater experience.  Every time I go it takes my breath away.  There are a few film festivals this summer as well as The Little Mermaid.  With so many options it will be easy to plan a date to the Fox.  And ohmygosh ohmygosh ohmygosh – did you see that Wicked is coming back to the Fox in 2015?  I can hardly contain my excitement.

Six-Flags-Over-Georgia

Six Flags Over Georgia: While we haven’t actually been to Six Flags, it IS on the must visit list if you have children who are elementary age or older.  With Hurricane Harbor, a water park, opening this year…..we have to go see what all the fuss is about!

stone mountain

Stone Mountain: Stone Mountain Park is Georgia’s most popular attraction.  There are two ways to get to the top of Stone Mountain.  This year we will be hiking to the top instead of taking the Skyride.  It is always fun to stay late and watch the Laser Show that lights up the sky!  Camping is one way you can enjoy an overnight visit to Stone Mountain, and I have to admit, it is a very tempting option.

Not included on this list, but other amazing Atlanta Attractions worth mentioning:

  • Callaway Gardens
  • Chatahoochee Nature Center
  • Fernbank Museum
  • Georgia Aquarium
  • Lake Lanier Islands
  • Marietta Square
  • Sawnee Mountain Preserve
  • Zoo Atlanta

Do you have a favorite spot to visit in Atlanta as a family?  I am always looking for hidden gems…or places that everyone knows about that I clearly am still missing!  I would love if you left a comment with your favorite Atlanta attraction.
