We all want the best for our little ones.  Why not start where they will spend many of their hours during the first year of their life:  their crib!  Naturepedic says it all in three simple words, “Safe Healthy Sleep”.  They specialize in organic mattresses and bedding for babies and children to provide parents with products that contain no harmful chemicals.

I was given the opportunity to try out the Naturepedic Organic Waterproof Fitted Crib Mattress Pad.  The minute I pulled it out of the packaging, I could tell a huge difference in the product versus my mattress covers that I was using on my baby’s bed.  I was impressed at not only how thick and well-made it was with the two layers of cotton flannel, but how soft and smooth the surface of it was.  It felt nicer than the sheet that I was planning on putting over the mattress pad!  (And this is where I will admit that I have actually let my little guy sleep on just the mattress pad with no sheet on it several nights.)  I tossed it in the wash before using it, and it washed up perfectly.  I can’t begin to say how much more peace of mind it has been to know that my baby is sleeping on mattress pad that blocks dust mites and allergens while reducing uneven temperatures, clamminess, and sweating.  My only complaint was that when I went to put it on our Sealy mattress, I realized that it was a little bigger than my other mattress pad covers are and caused me to have extra material on the surface (which made me nervous that my newborn would push the excess against his face).  It only made me wish I had a Naturepedic mattress in my possession right that minute so that my cover would fit better!  I soon realized that until I can get a Naturepedic mattress, I could benefit from the larger cover.  How many of you have young babies that leak more often than not if they sleep long hours at night?  I h-a-t-e trying to change the bed in the middle of the night because of a leak!   I have tried in the past to double-layer the crib with a mattress cover, sheet, mattress cover, sheet so that when he leaks I can rip one layer off and have a freshly-made bed, but my covers have never fit over the bulk of another before.  Now, they do!  I am loving the ability to quickly change my little one’s bed in the wee hours of the morning without the hassle of trying to find the sheets and get it completed.  If I already didn’t love the benefits of organic crib bedding, Naturepedic has defintely won my heart after trying out the waterproof crib mattress pad!

    I learned that the reason Naturepedic doesn’t need to use flame retardant chemicals is because they don’t use petroleum based fillers for their mattresses.

    I never actually measured my mattress for the current mattress pad we have. I see here that I really shoud have to insure proper fit and functionality of the pad.

    I learned that natural latex or rubber is actually bad for kids and has been related to high allergy rates. Naturepedic does not use natural latex or rubber in their products.

    I learned Crib safety goes beyond wood and bolts. It requires a non-toxic crib mattress as well.
