Before you know it, we will be ringing in the New Year! If your New Year’s Eve celebration this year includes children, be sure to grab a pen and get ready to jot down some party saving ideas. Jennifer Carver, of Spaceships and Laser Beams, is sharing her tips for New Year’s Eve party games and activities for kids!
Children of all ages love parties, especially when they get to stay up past their bedtime to celebrate! But, as the hour draws late, it gets harder and harder for children to keep energized and reach that midnight milestone. Having plenty of activities planned can keep them pumped!
Plan for a piñata! Drop the ball literally from your own ceiling and let little ones take a few swings. Ball shaped piñatas can be found at party stores and repurposed with metallic tissue paper or fringe to look like a disco ball. Fill the piñata with noise makers, party horns, strings of beads and small treats.
Plan a New Year’s Eve parade! Children love dancing, prancing, marching around and making a lot of noise! Pull out pots and pans, noisemakers, party horns and even a few festive props like party hats and crowns, for the children to use as they parade down your street or around your house.
Create a New Year’s Eve time capsule! Gather basic craft supplies, and invite guests to contribute a small item (marked with their name) to the time capsule. Let little guests decorate the box with stickers, markers, and other basic craft supplies. Snap photos of each guest. Have them draw pictures or record answers to a simple questionnaire to include in the time capsule. Save the time capsule and open it at the next New Year’s Eve celebration! Your little ones will love looking back on the previous year and seeing how much they’ve changed and grown.
Play card and board games! Round up child-friendly games such as Bingo, Chutes and Ladders, Hungry, Hungry Hippos, U-NO, and Sorry! Children love to play games.
Arrange for some interactive games! Relay races, charades, Pictionary and games such as “Minute to Win It” will help children get out some of their wiggles. A great deal of fun can be had with just a few simple materials.
Have a dance party! Turn up the volume on some of your favorite child-friendly tunes—let the kids dance and sing! Wind down with the classic Auld Lang Syne song that we associate with the changing of years.
Hold a scavenger or treasure hunt! Kids love scavenger hunts and looking for hidden treasure. Hide various New Year’s Eve related objects around your house and have the kids hunt for the items. Or, prepare clues for the children to follow to find some New Year’s Eve treasure!
By incorporating some of these fun activities in with some of your own ideas, your New Year’s Eve party is sure to be the talk of the neighborhood!
