Baby Shower Ideas for a Teacher: Our In School Baby Shower

May 5, 2014 by Leandrea Voskanian

My daughters both have great teachers.  I love being the room mom for my Kindergartener, whose teacher is pregnant and due a few days after school ends (fingers are crossed that she makes it all the way to her due date).  We decided to have an in school baby shower.  Finding baby shower ideas for a party that happens during school hours was a little tough so I am sharing what we did.

Tips for Hosting a Baby Shower for a Teacher

Choose a theme. ABC’s, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, and Dr. Seuss are all great themes for a teacher.

Send invitations. Be specific with details when you are sending invitations.  Are parents welcome to come or is this a classroom only event?  Is there a dress code (i.e. nicer attire for a Tea Party theme, jerseys for a sports theme)?  Where is the teacher registered?  Do you have another gift theme in mind (board books make great gifts and everyone needs diapers)?

What to Give? Some families do not have extra money to donate for a gift, so keeping it simple is a great idea.  Have a board book theme (kid’s can bring old books from home even) or an alphabet theme.  Diapers are always practical.

Decide upon a menu. Simple is good.  Cake is the big item at an in school baby shower.  Fruit or pretzels are easy to divvy and look cute in little party cups.

Make or purchase decorations and goodies.  The Dollar Store is a great place to get cheap supplies.  Plastic tablecloths make clean up a snap.  A few brightly colored napkins add a nice pop.  A good alternative to candy are tiny flower pots with seedlings.

Plan a game…or two!  We played “Guess How Many Toilet Paper Squares?” I made a Guess How Many? worksheet (<– you can right click and save that to print yourself) for the kids to fill out with their guesses.  We also played Pass the Poopy Diaper (using a completely clean diaper) in the theme of Hot Potato.  Pass the Poopy Diaper was so much fun! Other fun games include Pin the Pacifier on the Baby and Baby BINGO.

Memory Making.  Snap a few photos of the party so the teacher can tuck them into the baby’s memory book.  Add to the day with a Teachers Gift Genuine Wish Pearl Apple Necklace (have the kids make a wish for the teacher and/or baby while sitting together in a circle).  Create a canvas with the students’ handprints.  My friend Amy did this with her sons’ class and I LOVE the way it turned out.

I created a How to Take Care of a Baby worksheet for all of the kids in class.  I will laminate a cover sheet and have it bound into a book for the teacher to keep on her shelf.  Kindergarteners have some great advice.  🙂  Don’t worry, I won’t make you recreate my work.  Download your own copy of the How to Take Care of a Baby Worksheet in pdf form to use yourself.

With the help of two very talented moms we decided on a duck theme for our children’s Kindergarten teacher.  I had already ordered duck favors from Oriental Trading when they had a free shipping offer (I shopped through Mr. Rebates and earned 3% cash back. I should have used TopCashBack for 5%, but I purchased the duckies prior to signing up with them).  One mom made printable tags and the other mom took charge of the pencil pom poms (similar to these Tulle Wands) and other decorations.  Another mom ordered the cake.  This party was definitely easy with all the help!

Have you been involved with an in school baby shower?  Do you have any tips for throwing a baby shower in general?  We would love to read your comments.

I love that cake and what a great check list you’ve given to make sure that everything runs smoothly and the shower is a success.

This is a really cute idea! My daughter is 12 and baby obsessed…she would be all over the planning of a party like this!

Very cute and creative! I love the mason jar center piece and the blue and yellow color scheme. I bet it was a hit!

I’ve never done a school baby shower, but your ideas are great for any baby shower in general! I love getting crafty and giving things that the baby will need down the road. I also love doing educational gifts such as books and ABC type things because I’m old school and think we don’t need all these new and fancy toys. 🙂 Good luck!
